The Dance of Life

When I danced at three years old I bent my knees and bobbed.
It made my parents laugh so much they giggled 'til they sobbed
At five I jiggled fretfully to try and keep the beat
My arms and legs waved manically. I didn't move my feet
At ten I was self-conscious and I barely danced at all
If no one was about then I might shimmy down the hall
At seventeen my look was cool. wide trousers and long hair
I barely moved my lanky frame as though I didn't care
I'd be the tallest in the room. As skinny as a rake
Trying hard to look the part by writhing like a snake
My twenties saw me disco and Travolta led the way
We danced in lines and pouted like a 'Night Fever' cliché.
The eighties brought 'the moonwalk' , 'the robot' and 'the worm'
You had to lie upon the floor and rock about and squirm
I tried it once and hurt my back. My clothes got grubby too
I stuck to dancing vertically – the proper thing to do
The nineties brought in hip-hop as my stomach started spreading
My fame spread too as I perfected 'old dad at a wedding'
This century I thought that all my dancing days were done
But all my children's children have made dancing so much fun
The challenge came from Canada. 'Twas 'All about the Base'
Georgina set the standard and at six years old was ace
We all recorded videos to see who was the best
I did mine in record time but then needed a rest
As the years go quickly by I still enjoy a dance
Keep dancing friends with all your heart while you still have the chance
