The Final Set
We seemed to play from dusk ‘til dawn
The mosquitoes were biting
It’s always tough at Southend Lawn
But would we go down fighting?
Will and Simon won with ease
That’s two points for the team
Peter. Ryan - what a pair
Well they played like a dream
Four points up we’d won the match
Just us to try our tricks
But ploughing on we lost the first
By only seven – six
It was a tie break - just two points
Had brought us to a halt
Kev and Charlie hit us hard
A powerful assault
We then fought for the second set
Our pride was now at stake
We needed to play cautiously
And not make a mistake
We reeled, defended, hit back too
At four all things looked good
Then five four down we had a chance
Well that was understood
Deuce – advantage – deuce again
The ball flew through the air
Point for point and hit for hit
A very tight affair
Why write this rhyme if not to say
We stole the final set?
But sad to say we lost it
And I’ve not recovered yet!
